Spanish and Italian airlines want to fly to Ghana - Deputy Transport Minister

Spanish and Italian airlines have expressed their interest in operating flights to Ghana, according to the Deputy Transport Minister. This development presents an exciting opportunity for both countries to further enhance their connectivity with the West African nation. By allowing these airlines to fly to Ghana, we can expect increased tourism, business, and cultural exchange between the respective nations.

An unnamed Spanish carrier and one Italy-based airline are seeking to operate direct service into Accra’s Kotoka International Airport.

The two airlines have, therefore, officially applied to Ghanaian authorities for the requisite permits to enable them to start operations.

Airlines seeking direct service to Accra

“We have received applications from Spain and Italy in terms of airlines wanting to fly directly to Accra,” Deputy Minister of Transport, Hassan Sulemana Tampuli has disclosed.

There are currently 23 international and regional flights servicing KIA. Three domestic airlines—Africa World Airlines (AWA), PassionAir, and GIAN AIR—provide scheduled and non-scheduled flights to the domestic market.

Lack of direct flights to Madrid

Despite these connections, there is currently no direct flight out of Accra, Ghana to the Spanish capital Madrid, or any secondary city in the European Union member state. Travellers have had to use other European carriers when travelling to Madrid from Accra.

Asky Airline's plans for Madrid connection

Asky Airlines recently announced plans to connect its African destinations to the Spanish capital Madrid next year. Renowned for its leisure tourism and sports (football), the Spanish capital is the favourite of many tourists and is just under five (5) hours by air from Lomé, Togo. In the case of Italy, there has been an absence of direct service between the two capitals since Alitalia ceased operations
