Police deploy technology to track road offenders

The Ghana Police Service's Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) has suggested using an automated system called Traffitech-GH to police traffic laws on the roads.

According to MTTD, the Traffitech-GH system employs cameras and sensors to automatically record photos or videos of vehicles that break traffic laws, such as speeding through red lights or swerving through them.

At a first-ever stakeholders meeting organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Tourism and Industry (MTDI), the Director-General of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Consumer Development (MTTD COP) Francis Ebenzer Doku revealed that Traffitech-Gh will be deploying fixed, mobile and in-vehicle radar gun equipment to detect, among other things, speeding and red-light jumping.

He stated that photographs or videos of road traffic infractions will be automatically uploaded to his office for verification and a notification will be sent to vehicle owners via SMS for payment as a penalty.

He further expanded on the list of traffic offences that would be subject to the enforcement of the Trafficitech-GH, including the expiry of a roadworthiness certificate; wrongful overtaking; failure to wear seatbelts; the use of an expired driving licence; driving an uninsured vehicle; using a mobile phone while driving; and misuse of a siren.

Police spokesperson, COP Francis Doku, said that the Traffitech-GH notice will also state the place, time and location of the traffic offence, as well as the registration number of the vehicle, the description of the offence and the amount and date of payment.

He also added that the fine can be paid via Mobile money, online at www.traffitech-gh.com.gh, or at a bank within 14 working days of the date of the notification.

Defaulters who fail to pay within the 14-day period will be subject to an additional one-percentage-point penalty on the initial Traffitech- GH fine for each additional day of non-payment.

The Chief Operating Officer (COP) of Traffitech-GH, Francis Doku, is hopeful that the implementation of the Traffitech-GH system will lead to a more effective enforcement of road traffic regulations.

He also urged the public to accept and abide by the automated system in order to reduce the number of road accidents.
