India develops its green tugs program

India is moving ahead with its ambitious green shipping goals and aims to become a global leader in green ship building by 2030.

According to reports, four of India’s largest ports will place orders for new green tugs.

The country’s largest container handling port, the Jawaharlala Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), is expected to order two green tugs from Cochin Shipyard, while three other ports have been advised by the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways to prepare orders of two green tugs for each of its ports.

Deendayal, Paradip and V O CHidambaranar ports are also expected to most likely contract with state-run ship builder Cochin for construction of green tugs.

India’s ‘Green Tugs Transition Programme’ was launched in March, with the first green tugs expected to have hybrid propulsion systems by 2025, followed by at least 50% conversions of all tugs by 2030.
