We are pleased to report on the recent engagement between the Zonal Branch of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) and the Northern Motor Dealers Association, which took place on 18th February 2024 in Tamale. This meeting was a significant step in addressing the concerns raised by members of the association regarding harassment from tax collectors at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) – Internal Revenue Division.
In response to these concerns, the Zonal Office took proactive measures by reaching out to the Internal Revenue Division. A formal request was made for officers to provide education to the dealers on their tax obligations and to directly address their complaints. Subsequently, a sensitization session was organized and held on 26th May 2024.
During the session, members of the Northern Motor Dealers Association had the opportunity to clarify the different categories of dealers within their association. This distinction was made between those who directly import vehicles and those who procure from major importers and operate on a commission basis. Mr. Abdulai Fatawu, a Revenue Officer at the GRA, played a pivotal role in providing detailed explanations regarding the tax obligations for both categories. His clear and understandable breakdown of the tax requirements ensured that all members were well-informed about their respective responsibilities.
For direct importers, Mr. Fatawu outlined the specific taxes and duties required upon bringing vehicles into the country. He also explained the processes involved, including documentation, valuation of vehicles, and the deadlines for tax payments. In addressing those operating on a commission basis, he clarified the obligations related to income tax and provided guidance on reporting and taxation of earnings. Common misconceptions were addressed, and practical examples were provided to illustrate how tax laws apply to their specific business models.
Importantly, Mr. Fatawu emphasized the significance of keeping accurate records and offered guidance on maintaining proper documentation to avoid disputes with tax authorities. He assured the dealers of the GRA’s commitment to working with them to ensure compliance and minimize any undue stress or harassment from tax collectors.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to hold further engagements at individual shops for more in-depth discussions on the issues raised. Both the GRA officers and association members expressed their gratitude to the GSA for organizing the sensitization session and facilitating this important dialogue.
The Zonal Manager of the GSA also took the opportunity to provide a brief background of the Authority and its mandate. Emphasizing the importance of a strengthened relationship with motor dealers, he highlighted the GSA’s commitment to resolving challenges and making international trade more efficient and convenient for all stakeholders. By fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, the GSA aims to create a supportive environment for the growth of the motor trading industry in the region.
This initiative forms part of the GSA’s broader strategy to enhance the capacity of local businesses and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, ultimately contributing to the economic development of the Northern Zone.
In conclusion, this engagement exemplifies the positive outcomes that can be achieved through constructive dialogue and collaboration between industry stakeholders and regulatory authorities. The GSA’s commitment to facilitating such engagements is commendable, and we look forward to witnessing the continued growth and development of the motor trading industry in the Northern Zone.
