First hydrogen-powered inland shipping vessel now in operation

The world's first newly constructed inland shipping vessel, powered by hydrogen, has commenced operations. This groundbreaking development marks a significant milestone in the shipping industry. By utilizing hydrogen as its primary source of power, this vessel represents a major step towards achieving sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions. The utilization of hydrogen as a fuel source not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also provides a clean and renewable energy alternative. This innovative vessel sets a precedent for future advancements in the shipping sector, demonstrating the feasibility and potential of hydrogen-powered transportation. With this achievement, the industry is moving closer to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

Concordia Damen, a Dutch shipyard, has recently completed the construction of a dry cargo vessel called Antoine for Dutch owner Lenten Scheepvaart. The ship has undergone successful sea trials and is now awaiting the installation of a distribution panel to work in conjunction with the hydrogen fuel cell that has already been installed.

Purpose of the Antoine

The Antoine will be used to transport salt for Nobian, a European firm that produces essential chemicals for various industries. Lenten Scheepvaart has been shipping salt from Delfzijl to the Nobian plant in the Botlek for many years. The salt is turned into chlor-alkali, among other things, with hydrogen as a residual product. The hydrogen produced in the chlor-alkali production process will soon form the clean fuel for the Antonie. A hydrogen bunker station has now been built in Delfzijl with a subsidy.

Hydrogen Fuel Integration

The Dutch king recently visited the ship in Duisburg as part of an economic hydrogen mission to Germany. This highlights the growing interest in hydrogen as a clean fuel source in the Dutch maritime industry. There are currently several developments in the field of hydrogen production, storage and use, initiated by research institutes, grant providers, start-ups and established companies.

Developments in Hydrogen Industry

The use of hydrogen as a fuel source is gaining momentum, not just in the maritime industry but across various sectors. It is a clean and sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, and its adoption will play a crucial role in achieving global climate goals. As such, it is heartening to see companies like Lenten Scheepvaart taking the lead in embracing this technology and contributing to a greener future.
