Closing Niger airspace benefits Ghana

A greater number of flights are now using Ghana's airspace to reach their destinations as a result of the military regime's restriction of Niger's airspace.

Analysis of live flight feed on Flightradar24 shows European carriers re-routing their flights via Accra, Ghana, to major travel markets like Nigeria and Central and Southern Africa.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is expected to benefit from overflight charges, which cost US$150 for operators not operating into Ghana.

The closure of Nigerien airspace also compounds flight challenges on the African continent, as Sudan and Libya remain "no-fly" zones for international flights due to instability.

Detours and re-routing of flights have resulted in longer flight times and increased costs for airlines, potentially leading to higher airfares.
