Sky Train: Ghanaians were promised only happiness – Prof Charles

According to Rev. Prof. Charles Adams, a transportation expert, any government commitment to construct sky trains in Ghana should be taken with a grain of salt.

Such pledges by politicians, according to Prof. Adams, are made just for amusement.

"Building a railway network is significantly more complicated than creating a motorway with a toll booth, yet Ghana is trying to create a basic 18–19km motorway," the transportation expert said.

This is due to efforts to create systems like the Rapid Bus Transit (RBT), also known as Aayalolo, but they were unsuccessful because Accra lacked enough highways to support them.

Although the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund continues to reassure Ghanaians that the construction of a sky train in Accra is quite doable, Prof. Adams said that he as a transportation expert believes otherwise.

"Ghana should be more prudent and practical, as often we wind up wasting money on studies for which we are not ready. Particularly now, when Ghana visits the IMF every two years, he noted.

As a result, he says, "Ghana should go back to the drawing board and learn from other African countries like Nigeria and others who have been able to develop and maintain their train and railway system." He believes Ghana lacks the capacity to operate a sky train network.

"What Ghana actually needs is a workable transport strategy for the urban center of Accra," he declared in his conclusion.
