Shipowner imprisoned in the US due to ties to Iran

Mokhtari, a 72-year-old naturalised American citizen from McLean, Virginia and Teheran, Iran, was sentenced by the Federal Court in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to serve 41 months in federal custody, three years of post-release supervision, and a fine of over $2 million.

He had already entered guilty pleas to two separate plots to break American sanctions against Iran.

For the purpose of purchasing two liquid petroleum gas (LPG) tanker ships to carry Iranian petrochemical products, Mokhtari established a front business, East & West Shipping, in Panama.

Following the sale of the two vessels by East & West, the ownership of these vessels was transferred to other parties by Mr Mokhtar. A third party, Greenline shipholding, was then used to manage the operations of these LPG vessels.
