Dealers of salted fish (Kako) in Mankessim, in the Central area, have received training on import processes so they can conduct business legally. The Ghana Shippers' Authority (GSA) spearheaded the training as part of initiatives to maintain company sustainability and safeguard the traders' way of life. It aimed to solve the difficulties that traders face in the transit route, such as border delays, harassment by uniformed authorities, and numerous checkpoints.

The GSA urged members of the Mankessim Kako Dealers Association to rigorously abide by the importation laws, including the appropriate declaration of all commodities at the country's entry points, during the training that was held on Thursday, June 1, 2023.

Senior Technical Officer for the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr. Ezra Owusu, also urged the traders to use the GSA's E-Platform to find practical answers to the problems they have when carrying their goods via the transit corridor. He also suggested that they get in touch with the GSA at 054 738 3875 anytime they ran into problems on their travels.

Mr. Owusu underlined the need for their declarations to be transparent and that they must abide by all customs laws. According to him, doing so will help them avoid penalties and perhaps legal problems.

Agnes Asamoah Duku, Branch Manager, Takoradi Branch, said, “GSA is committed to providing swift and effective assistance to traders in such cases.” She added that Shipper Complaints and Support Unit ( SCSU) at the country’s borders and at the GSA offices in Accra (Tema), Kumasi (Takoradi) and Tamale (Kumasi) are also available for real time assistance.
