Kumawu’s new roads may get worse soon. – Chamber of Construction & Industry

Kumawu (Ashanti Region) asphalt roads constructed by the government a few weeks before the by-election were met with criticism from Ghana Chamber of Construction (GCCI) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Cherry. Speaking to Starr FM, Mr. Cherry expressed concern that the rushed mobilization of contractors could have a negative impact on the quality of the roads' work.

The Kumawu asphalt roads were constructed in the run-up to the by-election, with some residents believing the project was intended to encourage them to support the ruling party's Parliamentary candidate.

The Minister of Roads, Mr. Kwasi Aduana-Atta, however, maintained that the roads were part of the government's plan.

When it comes to contractors, as we say, there are bad nuts, but there are also good nuts among us, and there are more good nuts among us than bad nuts.

I can’t speak for everyone, but in my experience, from where I’m standing, we see many good contractors working.

But the problem before, for example, as we saw with the Kumawu by-election, was that overnight, contractors were on site working. What are the dynamics? It’s not planned.

So, after that construction, within a few months or so, you go back and see that the work has started to crack and what have you, because it wasn’t planned properly.

So if you walk into my office as a contractor and say that I should do it for you, and I give you my professional advice, and you say that you won't follow through with it, and you insist, I'll give you exactly what you gave me on paper.

Contractors, their job is simply to interpret what's on the paper that's under the supervision of a consultant. If you don't give us accurate drawings, we'll give you whatever we have on file. So don't hold it against us.
