Midland Main Line tunnels track improvements completed by Network Rail

The upgraded track is expected to help deliver a safer and more reliable railway

Network Rail has finished a 16-day track upgrade in the Derbyshire tunnels of Clay Cross & Milford.

After 17,000+ hours of continuous work, Network Rail have now renewed the tracks within these two tunnels on Derbyshire’s Midland main line.

New sleepers, ballast and drainage equipment have been installed in the now 183-year old Clay Cross tunnel.

In addition, new coated rails have been installed under ten of the tunnel’s shafts to increase their strength in extreme weather conditions.

The Milford tunnel has also been upgraded, with more than two miles of track being renewed in the tunnels.

A total of 32 technical trains were used across the two sites to replace 50,000 sleepers and 12,322 tons of ballast, as well as 360 tons of rail.

Network Rail Operations Director for the East Midlands, Steve Hopkinson, said, “I am delighted to announce that this important project to completely modernise the tracks in two tunnels in Derbyshire has been completed.

I would like to extend my thanks to all those who have been part of the journey whilst we completed this important programme of work.

Our passengers and freight users who use these two tunnels will now have much improved and more reliable journeys.”
