Cargo ship hijacked off Guinea Coast

A bulk carrier sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands was robbed while 16 nautical miles south of the city in Guinea's Conakry harbor.

Four armed individuals boarded the ship, according to the piracy reporting organization Maritime Domain Awareness for Trade Gulf of Guinea (MDAT GoG), and used force to remove the money from the safe.

The ship's identity hasn't been made public, but marine security experts Ambrey confirmed to Splash that the afflicted ship was the ultramax bulker Nyon, which Suisse Atlantique built in 2021.

A request for comment has been made to the Swiss owner.

According to Ambrey, the event lasted around 30 meters, and throughout the robbery, crew members were beaten and suffered minor wounds. Within three nautical miles, there were three additional ships, but they were unaffected.

There were 19, as opposed to 35 in 2021, pirate attacks in the Gulf of Guinea. The number of recorded incidents by the International Maritime Organization last year was 131 worldwide, the fewest since 1995.

However, after two tanker hijacking instances earlier this year involving the Success 9 of Hai Soon Diesel Trade and the Monjasa Reformer, anti-piracy organization the ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB) has urged for a continuing, robust, and coordinated naval presence in the region.
