Caltrain electric trains finish testing in the US

After successfully completing testing in the United States, the Caltrain electric trains have demonstrated their reliability and performance. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the modernization of our rail infrastructure. The electric trains offer a more sustainable and efficient mode of transportation, contributing to a cleaner environment and improved passenger experience. We are proud to bring this advanced technology to our railway system and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our community.

Caltrain has finalised testing for three new electric trains, with each of the new units having completed a thousand miles of testing along the Californian line.

Testing Process

The three trains, which form part of a set of 23, have passed the line’s 1,000-mile testing process to meet various safety and quality standards, with operation aiming for full passenger service before the beginning of 2025.

Statement from Executive Director

Executive Director, Michelle Bouchard, said:

“Rigorous testing of equipment is how we make sure that our corridor remains safe for passengers and the communities we serve.

“I thank our crews for all their hard work testing these vehicles through the night while we continue to carry passengers during the day. I look forward to the rest of the new fleet going through the same safety testing process and for the rollout of this impressive fleet for our passengers later this year.”

Features of the New Trains

The new trains, which feature a slew of passenger experience improvements such as wi-fi, power outlets, onboard displays and increased storage capacity, form part of Caltrain’s Electrification Project, the first transitional project of its kind within North America in a generation.

Caltrain’s Electrification Project

The project aims to replace the entirety of Caltrain’s diesel train fleet and associated infrastructure with a new, totally electric train system to set the framework for California’s future High Speed Rail network.

Current Status of Train Sets

Caltrain is currently in possession of six of the new Stadler manufactured train sets, with the remaining 17 set to be delivered over the next year.

Summary

We are excited about the potential that these advancements hold for our passengers and look forward to ushering in a new era of efficient and sustainable rail transportation.

Stay tuned for further updates as we progress towards the full deployment of this impressive fleet later this year.
