Network Rail is set to complete its £5.6m project to replace the bridge over the tracks at Bradford-on-Avon, allowing traffic to cross once again. The project, which has faced delays due to industrial action, poor weather and a lack of specialist contractors, is now in its final stages and the road will reopen on Monday 18th December.
Remaining Tasks
The bridge, located to the east of Bradford-on-Avon railway station, has been replaced due to its deteriorating condition, which made it uneconomical to repair. Although the team switched to 24-hour working in early November to finish the project as quickly as possible, there are still several tasks that need to be completed, including a vital utility service reconnection.
Starting from Monday 18th December, temporary traffic management will be in place to allow traffic over the bridge while a section of the road is closed to allow Openreach to safely finish the reinstatement of cables. During this time, parking restrictions will be in place on both sides of the bridge.
Apologies and Appreciation
Mike Contopoulos, Network Rail’s project director for buildings and civils, apologised for any inconvenience caused by the delay and thanked the local community for their ongoing patience. Cllr Caroline Thomas, Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Transport, acknowledged the impact on motorists and local residents and stated that they are working with Network Rail to ensure the completion of these complex works as soon as possible.
Benefits to the Local Community
It is clear that the replacement of this important bridge will greatly benefit the local community by providing a safer and more reliable route for traffic. Network Rail's commitment to completing this project despite the challenges faced is commendable and demonstrates their dedication to improving transportation infrastructure across the UK.
