Grays station set to commence accessibility improvements in January 2024

We are pleased to announce that Grays Station in Essex is set to undergo significant accessibility upgrades as part of the Access for All scheme. This initiative will include the installation of two new lifts, aimed at providing a more convenient and accessible experience for all station users.

Upgrades Under Access for All Scheme

The addition of two new lifts at Grays Station is a part of the Government’s ‘Access for All’ scheme, which aims to make railway stations more accessible to everyone. These upgrades will enable station users to access both platforms via the existing stepped subway under the tracks, thus eliminating the need to use the level crossing or stepped footbridge during busy times.

Benefits of Accessibility Upgrades

It is important to recognize that accessibility benefits a wide range of individuals, including those with health conditions or impairments, parents with young children, passengers with heavy luggage or shopping, as well as older individuals. By making stations more accessible, we are not only facilitating easier travel for individuals but also contributing to a reduction in car journeys, congestion, and carbon emissions.

Current Accessibility at Grays Station

Currently, step-free access is available at Grays Station; however, passengers with mobility needs are required to exit the station and use the level crossing to cross the tracks. The installation of the two new lifts will provide a much more convenient and shorter route for passengers requiring step-free access to access the adjacent platform via the station subway.

Implementation Plan

The installation of the two lifts is scheduled to commence on 8th January 2024, with an expected duration of approximately 12 months. During this time, the station subway will be closed to ensure the safety of station users while the work is underway. Passengers needing to access the adjacent platform will be diverted to use the level crossing or stepped footbridge to the east of the station.

Stakeholder Perspectives

Katie Frost, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia, emphasized the significance of station upgrades in enhancing accessibility and enabling more people to travel with confidence and ease. Rob Mullen, c2c’s Managing Director, expressed his satisfaction with the project's progress and highlighted its importance in supporting the local community.

Acknowledgment and Commitment

We appreciate the patience of our customers as we work towards implementing these key upgrades at Grays Station. The new lifts will undoubtedly contribute to a more inclusive and accessible travel experience for all station users. We are committed to ensuring that Grays Station continues to serve as a vital transportation hub for the community, with improved accessibility for all.
