Norwegian plans for world's first ammonia-fueled containership

Norwegian shipping company, in a groundbreaking move, has unveiled plans to develop the world's first containership powered by ammonia. This groundbreaking vessel is expected to enter service by 2026 and is being developed through a partnership between North Sea Container Line, Yara International, and its subsidiary Yara Clean Energy, with the support of the Norwegian Government's Enova investment fund.


Vessel Details

While specific details about the size of the vessel have not been provided, it is being designed for the trade route between Norway and Northern Europe. The ship will be optimized for service between Oslo and Brevik in Norway, as well as Hamburg and Bremerhaven in Germany. It will be operated by NCL Oslo, a new partnership formed by the collaborating companies.

Groundbreaking Plans

The plans for this vessel are groundbreaking as it aims to operate solely on ammonia from its introduction. While several engine manufacturers worldwide have made progress in designing engines and fuel supply systems that can run on ammonia, and several demonstration projects are underway, there is a race among companies to achieve the first commercial ammonia-fueled ship.


Environmental Impact

In their application to Enova, the project outlined that the containership would be powered by ammonia with a battery pack of 250 kWh and the option of shore power. The companies estimate that the operation of this new containership between Brevik and Europe will result in a reduction of 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.


To support this project, Enova has awarded approximately $3.6 million in funding. This grant is part of a larger $63 million program aimed at decarbonizing shipping. Another recipient of an Enova grant is Viridis Bulk Carriers, which plans to introduce two 4,700 ton cargo ships fueled with ammonia by the end of 2025. Additionally, Azane Fuel Solutions, in collaboration with Yara Clean Ammonia, will receive a grant for the development of ammonia bunkering. Other projects funded by Enova focus on hydrogen and battery-powered shipping, as well as carbon capture aboard ships.


Tribute to Sam Eyde

The containership developed through this project will be named Yara Eyde, in honor of Norwegian industrialist Sam Eyde. Eyde played a pivotal role in Norway's industrialization during the early 20th century through the development of hydroelectric power plants and was the founder of several major Norwegian corporations, including Yara, Hydro, and Elkem. It is worth noting that the prototype autonomous electric vessel developed by the collaborating companies was named after Kristian Birkeland, who was a partner of Sam Eyde.


This project marks another significant step for North Sea Container Line in its pursuit of next-generation shipping solutions. Last year, they announced the order of 1,300 TEU methanol-fueled containerships, which are set to launch on the North Sea in 2024.

Cmmitment 

Yara International is dedicated to contributing to the development of the ammonia-fueled shipping market. They are actively involved in funding the development and logistics segment for ammonia as a marine fuel. Yara Clean Ammonia will supply the Yara Eyde with ammonia produced through fossil-free or almost carbon-free processes. Their focus is on ammonia produced from renewable energy or natural gas, where up to 95 percent of CO2 emissions can be captured and permanently stored.


Ammonia Supply Network Collaboration

Yara Clean Ammonia is collaborating with Azane Fuel Solutions to develop an ammonia supply network for Norwegian and eventually Scandinavian ports. This initiative aims to make ammonia readily available as a marine fuel while also contributing to Norway's goal of reducing emissions from the offshore sector.
