Network Rail and AmcoGiffen Complete Dovey Junction Viaduct

Network Rail and AmcoGiffen have successfully completed the construction of the Dovey Junction Viaduct. This significant milestone marks another achievement in the ongoing effort to enhance the rail infrastructure in the region. The completion of the viaduct demonstrates the commitment of both Network Rail and AmcoGiffen to delivering high-quality projects that improve the reliability and efficiency of the rail network.

Major refurbishment of the Dovey Junction viaduct in North Wales has been successfully completed ahead of schedule, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Network Rail teams. Despite facing months of extreme weather conditions and working around the tides, the project was finished in a timely manner.

Project Details

Spanning 360ft in length, the Dovey Junction viaduct carries the Cambrian line over the Afon Dyfi (Dovey River), which is home to a variety of protected species, including ospreys and grey geese. Recognizing the importance of preserving these habitats, work on the viaduct began in September 2022 and lasted for eight months. To minimize disruption to wildlife, a pause in construction took place between March and mid-August 2023.

Originally built in 1863, this historical timber structure located in Powys presented numerous challenges for the Network Rail team and contractor AmcoGiffen, who were responsible for completing the viaduct works. The viaduct's unique construction features fifteen pairs of wooden piles deeply embedded into the estuary bed, adding complexity to the project.

Challenges and Solutions

The tidal nature of the Afon Dyfi required constant adaptation to the changing environment. By utilizing pontoons to access each wooden structure, the team ensured that work could be carried out safely and efficiently. An innovative solution was found by replacing sections of the wooden structure with Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) resin, a durable polymer made from recycled waste plastic. This modification ensures that the viaduct will require less maintenance in the future, reducing disruptions to the local habitats.

In line with Network Rail's commitment to environmental protection, approximately 77 tonnes of timber were removed from the structure, with efforts made to reuse and minimize waste. Furthermore, the team plans to donate around 90 meters of track panels to Gwili Railway, a heritage line, in the coming weeks.

Reflecting on the challenges faced during this project, Nick Millington, Network Rail's route director for Network Rail Wales & Borders, expressed his gratitude for the support and patience of the local community and passengers. He also emphasized the importance of safeguarding the environment along this picturesque stretch of railway. Millington added that similar restoration work is ongoing at Barmouth viaduct further along the line.

Andy Crowley, operations director at AmcoGiffen, praised the collaborative effort demonstrated throughout the project and highlighted its significance for future endeavors.

While the railway between Machynlleth and Pwllheli remains closed until Sunday 3rd December to allow for safe restoration work at Barmouth, Transport for Wales will continue to provide a combination of bus replacements and train services along the Cambrian line. Passengers are advised to check tfw.wales for up-to-date travel information.

In conclusion, the successful completion of the Dovey Junction viaduct refurbishment is a testament to the dedication and skill of Network Rail teams and their commitment to preserving both historical structures and natural habitats. This project stands as an example of collaboration and environmental responsibility that will shape future endeavors in the years to come.
