Maersk secures significant methanol fuel supply agreement in China

Maersk, the global shipping company, has recently announced a significant agreement to supply large quantities of green methanol fuel in China. This deal marks a major step towards the company's commitment to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable shipping practices.

Maersk, the world's largest container shipping company, has recently announced a significant green methanol off-take agreement with Chinese developer Goldwind. The deal, which is set to begin in 2026, will see Maersk purchase 500,000 tonnes of green methanol annually. This agreement is the largest to date in Maersk's global search for methanol supplies to keep its growing fleet of methanol-powered boxships under construction in Asia topped up.

Green Methanol Production

The green methanol volumes will be a mix of bio-methanol and e-methanol, all produced utilising wind energy at a new production facility in northeast China. This approach aligns with Maersk's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards more sustainable fuel options.

"We are encouraged by the agreement because its scale and price confirm our view that green methanol currently is the most viable low-emission solution for ocean shipping that can make a significant impact in this decade," said Rabab Raafat Boulos, Chief Infrastructure Officer at A.P. Moller – Maersk. "The deal is a testament to the momentum and vast efforts we see among ambitious developers driving projects forward across geographies, however, we still have a long way to go in ensuring a global green fuels market that can enable the decarbonisation of global shipping."

 Impact on Shipping Industry

Maersk's commitment to reducing carbon emissions is commendable, and this latest agreement is a step in the right direction towards achieving a more sustainable future for the shipping industry. As the industry continues to grow, it is essential that companies take responsibility for their carbon footprint and explore alternative fuel options. Maersk's partnership with Goldwind is an excellent example of how collaboration can drive change and pave the way for a greener future.
