HS2 has successfully completed the East-West Rail works at Calvert. This significant milestone marks a major achievement for the project. The completion of these works demonstrates the dedication and expertise of the HS2 team in delivering high-quality infrastructure projects. The East-West Rail works at Calvert will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity and improving transportation links in the region. This achievement is a testament to the commitment of HS2 in delivering efficient and sustainable transportation solutions for the benefit of the community.
Project Details
HS2 Ltd has recently announced the completion of the East-West Rail section of earthworks at Calvert, marking a significant milestone in the development of the new Oxford to Cambridge link. The project has been completed with minimal disruption to the local community, thanks to the construction of two bridges, one underpass and 3.4km of adjacent earthworks for EWR where the two projects cross.
The intersection bridge, which weighs the same as 25 double-decker buses, will carry local and regional trains over the top of one of the longest cuttings on the HS2 project. Two smaller bridges and one underpass will take local roads and a footpath across EWR. The completion of this work is a significant achievement for both HS2 and East West Rail, two of the country’s most important rail infrastructure projects.
Contractors Involved
The earthworks and bridges were delivered by HS2’s main works contractor EKFB, a group made up of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and Bam Nuttall. EWR is being delivered by the East West Rail Alliance, which is made up of Network Rail, Atkins, Laing O’Rourke and VolkerRail.
Next Steps
With the large bridges and earthworks handed over, HS2 contractors can now focus on completing the Calvert cutting, which runs roughly north-south and will stretch for more than 2 miles. Once complete, HS2 will link London with Birmingham and the West Midlands, freeing up space on the most congested part of the West Coast Mainline and boosting growth around the four major station sites.
Rail Minister's Statement
Rail Minister Huw Merriman said: “The completion of this work marks a significant milestone for two of the country’s most important rail infrastructure projects and it’s great to see such strong progress being made as we press ahead with delivering both HS2 and East West Rail. These new railway lines will transform journeys for millions and the success of the work at this crucial site is another example of this Government delivering on its commitment to invest in infrastructure across the country to improve connectivity and grow the economy.”
Bridge Details
The main bridge deck was assembled on site and lifted into position last year with a 600-tonne crawler crane. Made of weathering steel, the 35m long bridge is designed to naturally age over time to a dark brown colour to help match the tone of the surrounding countryside.
Long-Term Plans
In the long term, the area will also be home to HS2’s Infrastructure Maintenance Depot, which is expected to create around 180 jobs locally. Work is also progressing on the Perry Hill overbridge to the north of the site with the steel beams and concrete deck now installed.
Summary
The completion of this work is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all involved in these critical infrastructure projects. It is an essential step towards improving connectivity across the country and boosting economic growth. The success of these projects will transform journeys for millions and provide new opportunities for businesses and communities alike.
