East coast of South Africa experiencing chronic congestion

Chronic congestion is increasingly becoming a concern along the east coast of South Africa. As the population continues to grow and economic activities thrive, the road infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the demand. This has resulted in frequent traffic jams and delays, causing frustration among commuters and businesses alike.

Backlog at Durban Port

Massive ship queues have been reported off the east coast of South Africa, as the ports of Durban and Richards Bay struggle to handle the influx of cargo. Durban, which is ranked among the poorest boxports productivity-wise in the world, has seen 63 ships backed up, with Transnet, the country's port operator, warning that it could take until February to clear the backlog. The situation has prompted liners to institute congestion surcharges and announce some dropped calls to South Africa, as more than 70,000 containers remain stranded off Durban.

Crisis at Durban Port

The root cause of the problem is a lack of investment in equipment and its maintenance, according to Transnet Chairperson, Andile Sangqu. He warned that resolving the issue would take time, as lead times for some of the necessary equipment are anything from 12 to 18 months. Meanwhile, Transnet Group CEO, Michelle Phillips, described the ongoing crisis at the port of Durban as "Rome is burning," citing a damaging combination of a lack of maintenance and inadequate investment in infrastructure, which has left old equipment unable to withstand the weather.

Problems at Richards Bay

At Richards Bay, a key dry bulk export terminal, Transnet is holding an emergency meeting with port officials and industry representatives to address the port's many problems. The country's Road Freight Association has pointed to truck congestion at Richards Bay as a consequence of the country's failed rail system, which should be used to transport goods. Transnet has suspended the receiving of goods at the port from trucks due to heavy traffic on the roads.

Importance of Investment in Infrastructure and Equipment Maintenance

The problem of port congestion is a complex one, and it highlights the need for investment in infrastructure and equipment maintenance. The situation at Durban and Richards Bay serves as a warning to other ports around the world that neglecting these crucial areas can have serious consequences for global trade. As the world economy continues to grow, it is essential that ports keep pace with demand and ensure that cargo can be handled efficiently and effectively.
