Liberian-flagged product tanker hits mine in Black Sea

A Liberian-flagged products tanker struck a mine on Sunday in the Black Sea near the Bystroe Canal between Romania and Ukraine.

The 6,620 dwt Ali Najafov, owned, according to shipping databases, by Turkey’s Palmali, reportedly sustained damage to the starboard side and ballast tanks with no injuries to the crew.

Security consultants Ambrey said the tanker entered Ukraine’s territorial waters on Sunday around 08.00 hrs local time and remained adrift outside the Bystroe Canal. It entered the canal on Monday with the assistance of two tugs that sailed out of the port of Vylkove.

The 22-year-old tanker, which arrived from Georgia, is the second vessel this month to have been hit by a floating mine near the Bystroe Canal.

On October 6, a small Turkish-flagged general cargo ship, Kafkametler, hit a mine 0.2 nautical miles south of the latest incident.
