Roads Ministry hosts stakeholders' meeting on National Roads Authority proposal

A stakeholder consultation session on the creation of the Ghana National Roads Authority was hosted by the Ministry of Roads and Highways in Koforidua, the Eastern Region's capital.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has accepted the Ghana National Roads Authority bill, which was put out by the ministry and the attorney general's office.

The Ghana Highways Authority, the Department of Urban Roads, and the Department of Feeder Roads will be combined into a single entity once it is approved by cabinet and parliament.

A single organisation called the Ghana National Roads Authority will be in charge of organising, creating, maintaining, and managing Ghana's entire national road system. It would also be in charge of supplying associated issues like traffic control and road safety.

The Ghana National Roads Authority will have control over the trunk, arterial, collector, district, and inter-district road networks throughout the nation.

The integration of the three road agencies, according to sector minister Kwasi Amoako-Attah, aims to streamline operations, improve coordination, and maximise the impact of investments in the road sector to serve the needs of both urban and rural areas. He made this statement in an interview with the media after addressing stakeholders on the draught Ghana National Roads Authority bill.

"Instead of the three divisions we currently have—the Ghana Highways Authority, the Department of Feeder Roads, and the Department of Urban Roads—we are recommending to cabinet and ultimately to parliament the establishment of one authority for the roads sector. We carry out the same tasks, he said.

"The Highway Authority manages the nation's main thoroughfares. The Department of Feeder Roads handles roads that lead to rural areas, whereas the Urban Roads Department handles internal and city roadways. But I believe it is time to combine all three agencies for the roads sector's proper efficiency, as it will be more cost-effective.

Seth Kwame Acheampong, the Eastern Regional Minister, pleaded with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to take action to repair the appalling condition of the roads connecting the regional capital.
