Kotoka International Airport commemorates Girls in Aviation Day

Kotoka International Airport has celebrated the ninth Females in Aviation Day. The purpose of the day is to encourage young women to pursue careers in aviation. It is observed globally by the many chapters of Women in Aviation International (WAI). The WAI Ghana Chapter, which consists of women professionals working in the aviation industry, organised the event in Ghana.

Selected pupils from the senior high schools of Accra Girls, Temasco, Ola Girls, Lashibi, and Afia Kobi had the honour of being sponsored for the event this year.

The Ghana Chapter of WAI was founded in 2015 to bring all the women in aviation together, according to Madam Juliet Okae, President of the WAI Ghana Chapter and Deputy Director-General (Finance & Administration) of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, who gave the opening comments. She claimed that the establishment of Chapter was essential because it provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and, in essence, helps to unlock the potential of Africa's youth, particularly young women. She said that the Umbrella organisation, Women in Aviation International, sponsors the Girls in Aviation programme, which is a flagship initiative designed to encourage young girls to pursue careers in the aviation sector. She made reference to the necessity of catching them young and educating them for the future. She claimed the WAI Ghana Chapter was considering starting an aviation group.

In her remarks, Mrs. Pamela Djamson-Tettey, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Ltd (GACL), commended the President and Executives of WAI, Ghana Chapter for organising the occasion.

She referred to the aviation industry as being diverse, dynamic, and quick-paced, with women professionals setting the bar in a variety of fields, including airline managers, aircraft engineers, flight attendants, aircraft marshals, air traffic controllers, aviation security officers, rescue and fire fighting officers, electrical, civil, and structural engineers, among many others.

She exhorted the young girls to make the most of the chance by engaging completely in the numerous educational sessions and tours so they could talk about their experiences with their schoolmates.

In his remarks, Hon. Hassan Tampuli, Deputy Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for the Northern Region's Gushegu Constituency, emphasised the aviation sector's immense potential. He advised the young girls to view themselves as among the fortunate few given the exposure being provided and to work hard in their studies in order to realise their full potential.

He emphasised the important roles that women are playing in the aviation industry and urged the young ladies to follow in their footsteps and pursue professions in it.

Women in Aviation International is a nonprofit organisation whose mission is to support and advance women in all areas of the aviation and aerospace industries. Through initiatives like the Annual Girls in Aviation Day, they provide educational outreach programmes to young girls both domestically and abroad.
