Tamale International Airport will boosts northern Ghana's growth - British High Commissioner

Harriet Thompson, the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Ghana, has declared her enthusiasm for the commencement of the Tamale International airport, which is expected to stimulate investment and development in the northern region of Ghana.

Tamale International Airport is a big milestone for Ghana's infrastructure development, and for her, it's a sign of things to come.

Ms. Thompson made these comments as she joined a number of distinguished guests, including Vice-President Dr. Mahmoud Garbiah, the United Kingdom's Department of Business and Trade (DBT) Country Director Giselle Ayarwa, and the UK's Northern Ghana Attache, Paul Edwards, at the inaugural ceremony of the newly established Tamale International airport on Tuesday, 22 August 2023.

After the ceremony, Ms. Thompson said, "We are celebrating not only the growth of Ghana's most important infrastructure, but also the potential of this amazing international airport to encourage investment and development in the northern region of Ghana."

"Tamale and this region of the nation are now linked to markets throughout the continent and the world."

"We also acknowledge the strength of the UK-Ghana economic cooperation," she continued.

The UK-Ghana Business Council spearheaded this initiative, which was financed by UK Export Finance and built by British firms in collaboration with Ghanaian firms.

For his part, the UK Minister for Exports, Lord Offord said: “Strengthening local infrastructure is key to supporting Ghana’s economic recovery.

“It’s fantastic to see the completed transformation of Tamale airport, backed by UK Export Finance and UK construction companies,

This will expand the country's travel alternatives, support regional economies, and open up new investment opportunities for firms.

The new development will boost travel to and from the North, with a special emphasis on the Hajj, which will be advantageous to Hajj pilgrims since the new Multipurpose Facility will act as a terminal structure during the Hajj Season.

The UK-Ghana Business Council was responsible for the project's inception. Since the Council's establishment in 2018, it has funded more than £223 million in infrastructure projects across Ghana and opened doors for both British and Ghanaian companies.

As a further boost to trade and investment, London will play host to the 2024 UK-African Investment Conference, which will bring together political and commercial leaders, as well as members of international and regional organisations from the UK and African countries, including Ghana.
