Suspend any recently announced new port tariffs – GUTA to Gov’t

According to the Ghana Union of Traders' Association (GUTA), the business community will not accept any raised port prices.

Dr. Joseph Obeng urged the government and the Ghana Port and Harbour Authority (GPHA) to stop implementing any new tariffs in a press release that was signed by the association's president.

He claims that the port administration is already grumbling about the poor traffic at the nation's ports because of the high expense of doing business.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority recently proposed stratospheric increases in port tariffs, which caught the attention of the Ghana Union of Traders' Association (GUTA) (GPHA).

"Our members, who are still struggling with the effects of the numerous taxes and levies that have recently been enacted as well as the economic problems afflicting the nation, are surprised by the announcement.

He continued: “And also, at this time that the port authorities themselves have been complaining about low traffic at the country’s ports due to high cost of doing business, this decision would further influence increases in shipping line charges.

"We demand that GPHA postpone the implementation of these new tariffs, which come one year after the last hike, and involve stakeholders because the negative effects of these increases will further increase the high cost of doing business," the statement reads.
