Bangladesh tanker blasts cause four deaths and 20 injuries

A product tanker in Bangladesh has been destroyed by an explosion, resulting in the death of four people and the wounding of nearly 20 others.

Four crew members were killed and five more were hurt when the 2012-built Shagor Nandini-2 experienced an explosion and fire in its superstructure on the Sugandha River in Jhalokati on Saturday.

On Monday, there was a second blast that started a fire while oil was being removed, hurting at least 14 persons, including police officers.

After roughly 10 hours on Tuesday morning, four firefighting teams managed to put out the flames.

Over 400,000 liters of the 900,000 liters of fuel oil that the SHR Navigation-owned ship delivered to the Padma Oil depot in Jhalakathi have been recovered since the explosion.

The hull of the Shagor Nandini-2 ship ruptured in December, resulting in a significant oil spill in the Meghna River close to the Bhola area in the south. Six persons were killed in an explosion on the company's Shagor Nandini-3 in the Sugondha River in November 2021.
