Indonesian container terminal construction by DP World to commence

Belawan New Container Terminal in Indonesia will soon be managed by Dubai-based terminal operator DP World, which also plans to undergo a significant expansion (BNCT).

According to DP World, an agreement has been finalized with Pelindo, a state-run port operator in Indonesia, and the Indonesia Investment Authority.

The collaboration between the three organizations will establish Indonesia's closest connection to the Malacca Strait, one of the busiest maritime lanes in the world.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the CEO of DP World, Arif Suhartono, the president director of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia, and Ridha Wirakusumah, the CEO of the Indonesia Investment Authority, all signed the contract.

The arrangement seeks to raise BNCT's capacity from its present level of 600,000 teu to 1.4 million teu over the longer term. In order to access regional and international markets, North Sumatra will rely less on regional hub ports thanks to BNCT's goal of luring more direct calls.

Currently, the BNCT acts as a regional hub for the Sumatra neighboring provinces. Its status as a significant commercial and logistical crossing point in the Malacca Strait will be strengthened by the expansion and modernization work.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem stated, "We are happy to assist Indonesia in enlarging the Belawan New Container Port and supporting its goals to improve the economy of Sumatra through infrastructure.

This year, DP World has already negotiated agreements with a number of terminals worldwide. In March, the business decided on a long-term lease for the facility and began construction on a new edible oil terminal at the Port of Berbera in Somaliland.

In February, DP World won a concession to build, run, and manage the "mega-container terminal" at Deendayal port on India's west coast. Earlier in the same month, DP World announced a $35 million investment to expand and modernize its facilities located on the left bank of Brazil's Port of Santos.
