Canada port strike scheduled for July 1

On July 1st (Canada Day), ILWU Canada has called for a 72 hour strike at Vancouver’s and Prince Rupert’s ports as labour negotiations with employers continue to stall.

As the previous contract ended at the end of March, employers in the shape of the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) and unions have been negotiating over a new one for months.

In a last-ditch effort to prevent the strike on the west coast, more talks are anticipated today. Dry bulk and cruise ships are still likely to be permitted to dock, although the strike is anticipated to concentrate on containerships.

Joe Biden, the US president, was compelled to send his labor secretary to California earlier this month to prevent comparable industrial action due to problematic contract negotiations on the other side of the border.
