The Hon. Deputy Minister for Railway Development spoke on Tuesday, September 14th. At the Ministry of Railway Development, Kwaku Asante-Boateng (MP) unveiled the eleven new members of the Ghana Railway Development Authority's Board of Directors.
The Board's inauguration is in accordance with the Railway Act of 2008 (Act 779) that established the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA). The GRDA's mission is to create opportunities for private sector participation in the country's rail transportation system and to establish a licensing and regulatory framework for a safe and secure rail transportation system.
Under Dr. Martin Amogre Ayanore as chairman, the Board of Directors will work with other public, private, and international agencies to carry out its duties, provide general advice to the Government on railway issues, and, subject to directives from the Minister, act as a railway regulator.
The Hon. Kwaku Asante-Boateng (MP) and Mr. Ernest Yaw Owusu, Ing. are the other Board members. Ernest Kwame Obeng, Dr. Emmanuel Adem Opoku, Madam Sophia Abena Tijani, Mr. Fridoline Kwesi Bansah, Mr. Michael Achagwe Luguje, Mr. Jonathan Kwasi Azasoo, and Mr. Edwin Allotey Acquaye
After taking the Oath of Office and the Oath of Secrecy, the Honorable The MP Kwaku Asante-Boateng asked the Governing Board of the GRDA to support President Akufo-Addo's plan to improve and modernize the country's aging railway system. This will require the Board's hard work and dedication. The Deputy Minister also urged the general public, including individuals and organizations from the public and private sectors, as well as all other stakeholders, to provide the Board and the GRDA with the necessary support to guarantee the long-term growth of Ghana's railway network. After that, he exhorted the members of the Board to avoid missing meetings and to maintain their dedication and diligence in carrying out their responsibilities.
Dr. Martin Amogre Ayanore, the Chairperson of the Board, expressed appreciation to President Akufo-Addo on behalf of his coworkers for the confidence he placed in them. He stated that the Railway Act will direct His Team in carrying out their responsibilities. Additionally, he reassured the CEO of the GRDA and the Minister for Railway Development that the Board will ensure that institutional policies are strengthened to enable the GRDA to fulfill its mandate.
He assured that the Governing Board would take action to address the threat and condemned the society's unscrupulous members for stealing railway items. Finally, he appealed to the general public to support the Ghana Railway Development Authority's effort to modernize the railway industry in order to boost the country's economic growth.
